Coronavirus: What You Need to Know - June 2, 2020
In our final coronavirus town hall, we address the unprecedented times we are facing as a community and where we go from here.
The issue of systemic police violence against people of color has deeply resonated with protesters in Sonoma County. Tuesday marked what would have been Andy Lopez’s 20th birthday. 13-year-old Lopez was killed by a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputy while carrying a toy gun in 2013. In the beginning of the show, we paused from our coronavirus coverage to reflect on where we are as a community.
The coronavirus continues to have a disproportionate impact on the Latinx community in Sonoma County, with over 70 percent of all cases being reported in those who identified as Hispanic or Latino. News Director Steve Mencher spoke with community organizers Gabriella Orantes and Ana Lugo about whether the county is doing enough to serve the Latinx community.
Co-host Adia White spoke with Laurie Fong, President of the Santa Rosa School Board, about the inequities the pandemic is bringing to light and what we can do to resolve them.
Meanwhile, Sonoma County plans to open hair salons, religious services and in-door dining on Saturday. We spoke with Sonoma County Health Department's Rohish Lal about what this means for our community.
As Sonoma County moves forward with reopening more businesses, co-host Adia White spoke with Executive Director at Sonoma County Economic Development Board, Sheba Person-Whitley and Sonoma State Economics Professor Robert Eyler about the overall economic outlook in Sonoma County.
Pamela Lorence provides an update on equity issues in the South Bay.
Although Tuesday’s Town Hall was our last scheduled program, we will still be covering the coronavirus pandemic in our radio and TV news reports and online at NorCalPublicMedia.org.
